Great Salt Lake Institute
The Great Salt Lake Institute at Westminster University strives to connect people to the Great Salt Lake through research and education. Their mission it to connect people with plants and the beauty of living landscapes.
The Salt Lake City Garden Club has partnered with Red Butte Garden to raise funds that benefitted graduate students at the University of Utah, whose focus is Environmental Design.
Utah Native Plants
There is a strong and growing movement across the United States recognizing the importance of native plants to our environment and for building sustainable ecosystems. Native plants are essential for healthy and diverse ecosystems, and play a critical role in cleaning air, filtering water, and stabilizing soils.
During April 2024, a Native Plant Proclamation was issued by Governor Spencer J. Cox. The proclamation encouraged Utahns to celebrate the importance of native plants by planting more native trees, creating pollinator gardens, removing invasive plants, and educating the public about the many advantages of native plants.
It is important to encourage public awareness about the benefits of native plants to pollinators and other wildlife, to the economy, and to the health and sustainability of Utah’s fragile ecosystems. To this end, the Salt Lake City Garden Club is raising funds to establish and maintain a Native Plant Community Garden that will enhance our local cityscape.

Our History
The Salt Lake City Garden Club (SLCGC) was established in 2018 by a group of Utah women with shared interests in gardening, conservation, floral design, horticulture, and photography. Its members are representative of many professions, educational backgrounds, and skills, all of whom are highly involved in their communities. Members share a passion for gardens, as well as a commitment to beautify, conserve, protect, and restore the sustainability of Utah’s diverse ecosystems. To this end, members’ efforts have ranged from creating and maintaining a local community garden, to supporting existing environmental organizations with volunteers and resources.
With an emphasis placed on education for both its members and the community at large, the SLCGC endeavors to positively advance and expand the scope of its outreach and impact to improve Utah’s environmental landscape, now and in the future.
