“To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.”

Committees with a Cause.

As an organization, we know strategic focus and clear action planning are essential to achieving our mission and producing valuable outcomes.  All Salt Lake City Garden Club members participate in one of our four committees, which represent the strategic pillars of our organization.

These committees bring together great minds, build camaraderie among members, and connect our organization with key partners, sponsors and donors, as well as members of the community.  You’ll find our committees working in tandem to achieve responsible environmental stewardship.

CONSERVATION

Restoring, improving, and protecting the quality of the environment is a key tenet of the Salt Lake City Garden Club. Environmental and conservation issues are imparted to members for the purpose of action in community affairs and civic improvements at the local, state, and national levels.  Lectures, field trips, and community projects provide opportunities for members to become involved in conservation efforts in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.

HORTICULTURE

The word horticulture is comprised of the Latin words ‘Hortus’ and ‘Colere’ which mean ‘garden’ and ‘to cultivate’ respectively. These ideas are central to the work of our committees who nurture and stimulate conversation, as well as increase knowledge and a love of gardening. The committee studies the influence gardens can make on the environment and the health of our community; sponsors lectures, demonstrations, field trips, and projects to create awareness about the art and science of horticulture.

FLORAL DESIGN

Balance. Scale. Harmony. Just as these concepts influence floral design, they serve as inspiration to our floral design committee.  The beauty and joy of floral design is a mechanism to serve our club’s activities and outreach in the community.  Members participate in classes and flower shows to hone their craft, then create arrangements for fundraising events and deliver floral arrangements to lift the spirits and infuse a love of nature to residents in need at local hospitals and other facilities.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Nature photography helps us explore the wonder of our natural surroundings.  On one hand, it helps us appreciate the beauty of our environment.  On the other hand, it can serve an important purpose to document, record, and trigger nature conservation and environmental action by educating our community about the vulnerability of our resources.  It takes great understanding and skill to capture images of nature, and our members work to enhance their knowledge of photography while building greater understanding about the environment.
