RECENT EVENTS
Albion Basin Wildflower Hike
On the evening of July 27th, a group of Salt Lake Garden Club members and friends enjoyed a hike through the Albion Basin wildflower meadows in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The volunteer guides from Cottonwood Canyons Foundation graciously provided each of our groups with a host who helped us learn more about the names and origins of the flowers, gave us tips on how to identify the trees in the canyon, and insight on conservation efforts.
Our thanks to Cottonwood Canyons Foundation for their partnership and kindness in making our event memorable and insightful, and for their hard work in supporting the environment of the Cottonwood Canyons through stewardship and education. Conservation Garden Park Tour
We continued our summer events by visiting the Conservation Garden Park in South Jordan on August 12th. A garden expert from the organization led our members on a private tour discussing a wide range of water-wise landscape and planting practices, reinforcing the concept that simple changes can result in big water savings. The group was inspired to learn about landscape plantings, paths and pollinators, vegetable garden planting bed examples, as well as numerous other drought resistant garden planting ideas.
The Conservation Garden Park is an inspiration and model for the best use of water in Utah landscapes and empower our community to make the most of our shared water resources. Learn more about them at: https://conservationgardenpark.org/
Frederick Law Olmsted Bicentennial Birthday Celebration
On April 26, 2022, with the backdrop of the beautiful Red Butte Garden and Arboretum in the foothills of the Wasatch Range, the Salt Lake City Garden Club co-hosted a wonderful bicentennial birthday celebration honoring the life and work of America’s foremost landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Architect and AIA Fellow, David H. Hart, addressed Olmsted’s landscape design influence at the Utah State Capitol. Olmsted’s lasting imprint at this historical site was executed with the 2008 Utah Capitol Restoration Plan. Noted sustainable landscape expert, Cynthia Bee, spoke about Olmsted’s consequential contribution to America’s landscape and parks, as well as discussed his work as an author, conservationist, and advocate for public lands.
